Tapes sent to Collective rarely disappoint me. Maybe it’s something to do with the fuzzy sound a tape player naturally makes, in contrast to cleaner CD recordings that I usually play on my laptop. You’re Jovian open up with a murky guitar sound and the vocals are enchanting as they cut in. Mumbling, with a sad tinge, this is right up my street. They change it up halfway through; to be honest I was content with the simplicity, but overall the first track is a great start.
We’re in shoegazey indie rock land FYI. It goes downhill from track two onwards and I am left frustrated. Who thought the keyboard on ‘Dumb Child’ was a good idea, Christ. ‘A Harmonic Minor’ picks things up on side two, with a slight Sebadoh vibe, but we’ve lost momentum. They’re giving it a good go though as ‘Seasons’ Of You’ and ‘Maybe’ have some quality, then ‘All Alone’ finishes proceedings adequately before they ruin it with a terrible outro. It’s like two different bands at times, and they’re both happy for Graham Repulski to design the artwork. Good in places but yeh it has disappointed me a little.
