Anagnorisis - Peripeteia - CD (2016)

Labels: Vendetta
Review by: Oli Saunders

That’s what the word ‘anagnorisis’ means. Meanwhile, the band Anagnorisis play an interesting form of black metal. I’m in a mixed place because I find aspects of the genre great but I generally can’t past the vocals. It’s true here also – it’s epic and well done, but I’m three songs in and thinking the guy needs to chill out a little. On the plus side, it’s not samey – there’s good variance and, whilst they do like to stay in a set of riffs for a good while, they do it well before moving on to the next one. The first song, an intro, has some spoken vocals; the second song has a creepy audio recording of someone interviewing a little girl. Not sure if it’s from a film or what. There’s a scattering of samples elsewhere, including more of the interview, some eerie singing, and some others. I personally find it detracts a little as it doesn’t really fit or make a point, unless the aim was to make me feel uncomfortable.
