Uncle Acid - Vol. 1 - Download (2017)

Labels: Rise Above
Review by: Alex Deller

Originally released as a micro pressing on the band’s own Killer Candy Records and bootlegged a couple of years later, this legit reissue brings Uncle Acid’s earliest rumblings into wider circulation. While not as well-rounded or fully-formed as later efforts like ‘Blood Lust’ or ‘Mind Control’ the germ of the band’s sound is very much in evidence: lightly-frazzled retro rock a la first-album Sabbath if Ozzy had snuck his love for the Beatles in through the back door. Even at this early stage K.R. Starrs displayed a dab hand for dark, catchy melodies and compelling songwriting, and while it wouldn’t be advisable for newcomers to make ‘Vol. 1’ their first port of call, existing fans will find much to enjoy when it comes to ‘Dead Eyes Of London’ or creepy-crawling opener ‘Crystal Spiders’.
