You call your band Droid and play scifi-infused thrash, so please forgive us for expecting some Vektor-level insanity. Sadly (inevitably?) there’s disappointment in store, because while these Canucks work the Voivod angle hard they can’t help but come up short. True, there’s plenty of ambition and no shortage of choppy, trebly widdling, but at the same time some mysterious cosmic particle is missing that renders things a light year or so shy of brilliance. Admittedly the wriggly rhythms and relentless thrash attacks are thoroughly enjoyable, but there’s something … perhaps the knowing, 80s-winking production job or the slightly crossover vocals … that stops you being totally drawn in by the band’s futuristic tractor beam. Next time, maybe?
