Apostle Of Solitude manage the neat feat of sounding utterly classic and at the same time utterly modern. It’s quite the coup, really, considering they’re nailed to the doom metal cross and the trad joist of it at that … a particularly tricky point where the likes of Candlemass and Warning reign supreme and most other triers fall laughably short. The band hit a sweet spot that’s equal parts riffcraft, songwriting skill and genuine sorrow, daubing the result with enough muck, blood and silt that it sounds real and lived-in rather than a bland technical homage. If there’s room for improvement it’s so incremental as to be almost beside the point, because as it stands right now ‘From Gold To Ash’ is a seriously impressive slice of glowering doom metal misery.
