This one seemed to come out of nowhere, like a spore-carrying meteorite crashing into a suburban lawn or a grotesque, tentacled thing rising from the calm waters outside a sleepy seaside town. It’s a truly twisted mix of sludge, noise-rock, industrial and mangled hardcore, wherein whole songs are constructed from those moments in the best sludge or powerviolence tracks where everything lurches, lifts and collapses in one lumpily graceful arc. To match the perversely ugly beauty of the music are some of the most pained and desperate vocals I’ve heard in an age – bleak, curdled screams drenched in blood, foam and stomach acid. That members of the overlooked and underrated Pale Horse are involved should come as no surprise, and overall it’s a brutally wonderful piece of work that serves as a perfectly apposite soundtrack to modern life on this absurd and wretched little island.
