Bakkara are a newish band from Maine who play some enjoyably gross hardcore. At first glance the skeleton and musculature seem normal enough … forceful and stocky, somewhere between Poison Idea and Discharge … but the deeper you delve you’ll notice that somewhere along the way strange growths and mutations have occurred. The echo-smashed vocals are the clearest indicator that something’s rather wrong, and the song titles (‘Sermon Of Gnar’, ‘Dream Demon’, ‘Spellcaster’…) serve to take us further away from established punk rock norms. This leaves us with something that’s familiar yet wilfully aberrant … a strange if pleasing experience that should definitely rub fans of Church Whip, G.I.S.M. and Impalers up the right way.
