Review by: Alex Deller
This one came accompanied instructions that said “Please give to Alex Deller, or someone else who likes brutal, abrasive, miserable music.” Not only does this sound like they’ve got my number for sure, but I was also disturbed that the handwriting looked rather like my own … all very Stefan Grabinski. Anyway, Active Denial play some bleak and unsettling power electronics over which disconsolate vocals wail and groan. The murky, washed-out sound adds to the unsettling industrialized ambience, and the crackling soundscape cascades from low thrums to whirring rotor blades about to lop the top off a zombie’s head and into a 50s sci-fi flick slowly collapsing in on itself. It’s not necessarily one to listen to while you walk to the shops in the rain if this time of year makes you want to jump out a window, but if you’re feeling resilient and fancy testing your resolve then by all means leap on in and let us all know how you get on.
