Odd, awkward, idiosyncratic rock music here from Michigan’s Sojii, and I quite like it. The jagged lumber and lurch might draw immediate comparisons to the Jesus Lizard, but the more I listen the more I’m minded of bands like Come, Chokebore and Bastro circa ‘Diablo Guapo’ … acts that sounded like they could be halfway conventional if they wanted to, but possessed on ornery streak that shattered whatever melodies they occasionally stumbled into and split their driving riffs down the middle with antagonistic creative choices. This release is obviously getting on a bit now, but since they released a live lathe-cut 7″ only last year hopefully we’ll be hearing more soon.
