Farrokh Bulsara - Nieder Mit Den Thujahecken - Tape (2017)

Labels: ape must not kill ape – Markus
Review by: Alex Deller

Oldie but a goodie here, and I’m not quite sure how it slipped through the CZ cracks considering it came out on Ape Must Not Kill Ape and features label head honcho Marianne (also of the excellent Sundowner) on guitar. Anyway! What you get are nine tracks of taut, wiry emo punk with some definite Rites Of Spring leanings. First track ‘Zerstören’ bursts into life with a Bullets In / Torches To Rome vibe and adds in a snifter of octave-driven epicness, while ‘Wie Sonntagnachmittag’ manages to dose its desperation with some surprising bounciness. As things progress it’s almost as though Farrokh Bulsara are an emo Time Team digging through different stratas of the genre’s history, unearthing a chip of Max Colby here, a fragment of the Khayembii Communique there and, if they’re not careful, running the risk of getting a grubby sliver of La Quiete right underneath a fingernail. Rather than a hodgepodge or a rote exercise, however, ‘Nieder Mit Den Thujahecken’ hangs together extremely well and sounds startlingly fresh – I’m not sure whether they’re still a going concern (this was released back in 2017, and there doesn’t seem to have been anything since then) but I honestly do hope there might yet be some more music to be dusted off and put on display.
