Two more tracks of crusty, misery-drenched sludge from this new(ish) UK act. Both songs follow the knotty, misshapen form of last year’s debut EP, though things have been tightened up a notch and the sound expanded to a fuller, more cloying state. Despite the sluggish pace and doom-laden vibes the band steer clear of typical doom metal tropes, pursuing a more hardcore line of attack that makes me think of His Hero Is Gone playing Grief songs. Moments of stabby dissonance rub up the against wanton clobbering, while speedier, tremelo-picked parts hint at craggy black metal wastes without fully crossing over into those desolate climes. It’s loud and ugly, but also markedly atypical – no mean feat for a sludge band in this day and age.
