Oh yes, oh fucking yes. Intense screamy emo for any lover of the style Yaphet Kotto are perpetuating. There is no question that this is based on a style that was doing the rounds earlier in the 90s, but I wasn’t there so I’m living that period 5 years late. And I’m doing it with bands like this.
I, Robot favour lots of darkly eerie twinkle parts (re: Yaphet or Indian Summer without such a variation in volumes) and around these they build the aggression, the searing screams, the noise that tears at your heart, the groove that grabs at your body and forces the movement. A great mix of passion, desperation and tenderness. Best example of Yaphetness: when they have singing mixed with occasional screamed backups on the twinkly slow part of “What If?”. Oh my. A song title: “the Mullets vs the Moustaches”, odd.
Not flawless, but give them a few extra dollars for production and I bet that by the time they get round to an album, they’ll be at the next level. Rather like how the men Kotto progressed. So give them a look now why don’t you?
