PUKU13 are back after their quality debut album with a brand new single on green vinyl, and have two spanking new songs and a cover song to show for it.
And whilst I did enjoy this single, it hasn’t blown me away. “Goleta” is part Leatherface, part Hot Water Music, chuggy, medium paced melodic hardcore, and would have fit fine on ‘Sound of a Gun’ but wouldn’t have been a stand out track. It’s pretty long too and drags a bit at the end. Other new track, “Dead Asshole” is more like it. Shouty, pounding hardcore that keeps a thread of melody running through the song like all the best bands of this type do. “Rat Patrol” is a Naked Raygun cover, a band that PUKU get compared to a lot, although not by me as I only have one 7″ by them. It’s more melodic hardcore stuff but because it’s a bit older it seems a lot simpler than most of this type of thing doing the rounds these days.
I’m convinced this band will put out something truly outstanding sooner or later, it’s just that this release is not it.
