Park Ave - When Jamie Went To London... We Broke Up - CD (1999)

Labels: Urinine
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Ha, I am reviewing this straight after Combatwoundedveteran. What a contrast. And I think the perfect example of why music can be so cool, because anyone can like anything, it doesn’t matter where it resides on the whole sliderule of genres. Is it any good?

Oh, Park Ave *sigh* Anyone in possession of the Saddle Creek sampler CD will know who they are, and I expect a fair percentage have been waiting for this album for a very long time. Alas, it just fails to meet my demanding expectations. Then again, expecting this band to write more songs that come anywhere close to the genius that is “lachrymose obsequious vehement elated” is just unfair. That song is simply: one of the greatest pop songs ever ever ever.

There are some very good, girl+boy (mainly girl) vocalled lo-ish fi indie pop tunes on here, like “All Boy Band”. And then there are one or two of the blandest most uneventful songs you will ever hear. And then there is the afforementioned “lachrymose…”. Gee, if they recorded this song 9 times and just put it on one record, I probably would have bought it. But they didn’t. They recorded it just the once, and it’s here. The crowning glory on this bands short lifespan.

They like their blippy keyboards, they sometimes sound a bit like Tiger Trap with a Promise Ring influence, they’ve split up. So can you stomach lo-fi indie pop? I guess if you can, then this is a must own. If not, then, go buy that CWV album instead. I do hope that you can handle a bit of both though.
