Review by: Andy Malcolm
And now for something completely different.
This is the 4th album from this lot (and I mean LOT – 10 different people participate on the album), and it’s out on noted ‘different’ label – Quarterstick. It’s the first album I’ve heard by the Rachel’s, but I guess it’s probably not wildly different from any of their others.
So those still in the dark – you’re asking what it is, yeah? Well, I’m not really up to the task of going into the ins and outs of the 60 minute masterpiece that is Selenography, but hey – what you have here is 12 pieces of music, that sort of blend the ideas of post-rock with classical music. For real. Here are some of the instruments used: piano (the dominant sound on this album), cello, violin, trumpet, vibraphone, harpsichord (on the 2 least enjoyable pieces). And it all adds up to something pretty, pretty special.
I couldn’t say how many albums like this that I’d want to own, but that’s not the issue here. This particular one is awesome, and is the best ‘chill out’ record I own I think. Perfect for late night, low light anything really.
Stick that boring and bland punk rock up your bum, and get some classical post-rock.
Go on.
Broaden your horizons.
I dare you.
