Review by: Andy Malcolm
I got sent this out of the blue by a chap named Ross along with something else that I actually was expecting to receive. I don’t think it was ever intended
to be for review. Ross doesn’t think that this demo is particularly hot himself. But I do. So, hey. And I am in the mood to write about this kind of thing,
rather than anything else right now. I feel inspired!
Deltona Wolves is from Florida (hey, it’s Florida band demo review day!) and they kick up dirt with 7 tracks of stuff where the sound quality is about as
demo as you will ever hear. It’s an absolute mess. BUT. I love it! I love the whole experience. I love how it’s just 4 guys in a room letting loose, spilling
everything out, spewing forth their emo! Guys! All music should be about this. People doing it because they can, not because they have access to a high
falutin’ recording studio and lots of pounds. Just people who have some guitars, a tape recorder and the passion, the spirit and the energy by the
bucketload.
If you wade through the sound quality (it’s worse than the Breakwater demo even, fuck me I need to find that dub amidst the mess of tapes I have), you end up with Deltona’s urgent,
passionate emo stylings, stuff that makes me think of bands like Mohinder but yet not so out of control and spazzed. There are killer melodic threads to
follow and the vocals are imploringly cried out. Yaphet Kotto perhaps, or the urgency and the fucking spot on fast melodies of “Gettin’ High” that suggest
Republic of Freedom Fighters as a comparison. Then again, I’m just guessing. It’s pretty much impossible to draw a comparison because the sonic wall of noise
is so dirty, but you can feel it. Oh yes. It positively oozes. My spidey-sense can detect DIY emo kids at 5000 miles. Don’t doubt it. Deltona Wolves have
their hearts in the exact right place. And even if they don’t know it themselves, this music connects. It connects with me, and who knows, maybe a bunch of
other saps too. Fuck knows. All I know is that this is what I want music to be. I am grateful that there are other people who can make the music that I
probably never will get the chance to. Deltona Wolves is punk as fuck. And I am in a ridiculous amount of debt to bands like this. A ridiculous amount.
