When I was in primary school, one of my best friends was allergic to Coca Cola. Just a mouthful would flick some kind of switch in his brain, sending him loopy with his eyes popping right out of his head as he jabbered incoherently and bounced off the walls. In later days he would use this frailty to exact revenge on family members who he claimed had wronged him, chugging down a can of that yucky brown syrup in order to transform him from Joe Schmoe into Intolerable Prick From Hell, jangling the nerves of all in the vicinity and setting parental hands to “strangle’ mode.
Stop It!! are the aural equivalent of said person multiplied by however many times necessary to create this much noise. They judder into life with a wild clatter that is somewhere inbetween Shotmaker and Drive Like Jehu, jabbering, gyrating, pushing shit over and generally causing havoc before you even realise what is happening. Chaos and melody tangled up with broken guitar strings and flailing limbs. Spittle-flecked lips yelling incoherencies inches from your face. This band is wired.
We are treated to brief moments of respite. Tentative periods of calm. Or perhaps just curious lapses in concentration. But whatever. You stop. You breathe for the first time in endless minutes. You begin to pick up the pieces. And then things explode again, because the band got the jitters from not moving for so long.
And so it goes. Groove-soaked hyperactivity and City of Caterpillar-esque spaciness sharing the same bed, a constant battle for the covers. A perfect mess, chaos as an artform. This cd-r is a goddamn blast. And I can’t wait to hear more from this band. Because if this is their first offering, then the next one could well knock the top of my head right off.
