Burst - In Coveting Ways - CD (2002)

Labels: Chrome Saint Magnus Records
Review by: Alex Deller

Four songs in sixteen minutes, and Burst have risen above and beyond their previous incarnation as a decent crust/metal/hardcore band with His Hero Is Gone aspirations and into a whole different beast entirely.

The basis is still there “” a huge wall of sound battling for supremacy alongside a gargantuan roar, but it seems they’ve hidden themselves away since their last record in some dark room and taken with them nothing but candlelight and At The Gates records. So, along with the time-honoured crowbar-in-the-neck pummel we’re offered wistful build-ups, portentous intros and a whole array of metallic riffs that stink of razor-edged melody. Dynamic and atmospheric, songs drop away from sheer devastation and into moments of calm with the blink of an eye, pausing for breath and pretty harmonics for mere seconds before seamlessly charging back into carnage afresh.
