Oh my god!! The press release that comes with this thing is so funny, I just don’t know where to begin!! Skankt play ska, but terribly. Contrary to what the paper says they don’t have the infectious groove missing from so many other ska bands. They have the same groove, albeit a bad one.
Opener “Night Out” is a carbon cut out modern bad ska song if I ever heard one, awful music and lyrics like “we’re gonna have a good night tonight” only further let it down. Things don’t get much better as there always seems to be a tendency to go “oh shit we haven’t skanked yet, we better throw a bit in”, or “better put some brass in here, its cool apparently!”
I don’t really see much point in going on, if you like ska, even if you like bad ska, I can’t see you getting anything out of this. Another thing that annoyed me was when the press release says “Skankt entered a ready made scene which Spunge and 4ft Fingers had built up”. What a shitty thing to admit. I don’t know a lot about the underground ska scene in this country but what I do know is I hate bands that scrounge off a scene and use it as a stepping-stone to stardom. They can prove me wrong if they want but this seems to be exactly what they want to do. What contribution have they ever made?
Coupled with some truly awful, awful artwork and inside pictures of them all acting zany and ska-esque this is truly one of the worst albums I’ve ever had to sit through. I sat through it a couple of times to at least give them a chance on the musical side but it is simply a bad album and one to avoid at all costs. As I come to a close the only thing its good for if flying through the air with a new game I just invented. Think I’ll call it Frisbee”¦.
