I is bein’ ‘ere listenin’ to dee new Sleater Kinney record. Aye.
Ah, sod it. Too much effort to do a ‘comedy’ review in the style of Ally G. Right, music. Sleater Kinney are dead popular and important, and I bought a single by them last year and I wasn’t much fussed with it. So I was hoping that maybe I would have grown into their sound by now.
First we have “Get Up”, which starts off very intriguingly. How to describe? Well, it’s an angular tangle of off-kilter guitars and quirkiness, and then when the mainly talked vocals kick in, all I can think of is a female fronted Van Pelt or something. Except they veer away from that as the song goes on, having a wavery sung chorus, and some sweetly done backing too. First time I put this on I didn’t really get it, though now I do. This is cool. Unconventional indie rock, always a good thing to have playing on your stereo.
B-side, “Turn It On” is a rather more regular piece of indie rock. Pretty noisy and with loud, shouty-sung vocals. Plus some cool handclaps. Sounds quite dated on vinyl. Solid, but I prefer the title track.
Like them a lot more than I did last year, that’s for sure. Aye.
