Okay, this is from 1997, but the Still Life material here is so good, and they haven’t put anything out for a while, that I have to review it.

Resin have something like 16 or 17 songs on their side so I’m expecting power violence? Possibly? And yeah, um, it’s kinda like Asshole Parade in places and Combatwoundedveteran in others. Overall, it’s fast lo-fi, sometimes metally, hardcore with sick, yelled vocals. This is kind of solid but not as excitinglycrazynfucked up as CWV? I keep using question marks in sentences that don’t look like question? I’m sorry. In summary: fast. If you like fast, you’ll like this. Some cool amusing samples, and their slogan is: “Mutilating emo wussies since the dawn of rock & roll”. Heh.

Still Life!

For those people that are going “Still who?”, these guys are like the longest running emo band around, and seeing as there are two brothers in the group, I’d be surprised if they ever split up too. On this record they play totally the best mix of screamy emo and pretty twinkles parts that you’ll ever find. Of the four songs on here, the first is just pure emotional outpourings, hoarsely yelled vocals played over dischordant guitars that just rolls a long and everything wells up. Incredible. Next up is the melancholy sounding “Elca Cucui Esta Aqui”, which breaks in very quietly with whisphered vocals, slowly building to the screamy parts. This’ll have you rocking back and forth in no time. The next song is incredible, just listen to that twinkle intro. Semi-acoustic guitars, and just the prettiest music you could ever hope to hear. Amazing. Up there with their song “Someone Stole My Bike”, which is like one of the greatest tracks ever submitted to record. I tape that song for everyone I can. Once again, vocals are subdued and buried in the mix, and the song is working towards the shouted vocals and the music gets all dissonant and off-key. Then it all slides back into the lovely strumming. This is just incredible. Things wind up on the powerful “The Book On You” which is all quiet/loud screamo, and just as great as all the rest. Beautiful. All four songs, simply beautiful.

Still Life don’t sound like anyone, cos they fucking invented this style. I have to get all the rest of their stuff now. For the uninitiated, this is your starting point.
