Soophie Nun Squad - Passion Sleighs the Dragon - LP (2004)

Labels: Nashaardaa
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I always enjoy a Soophie LP. Though I tend to only put them on when I am a bit drunk, because they tend to be party records and I enjoy them more in that state. I mean, this one opens up with the quirky little hip-hop title track to boogie and nod your head to. Works best for me with a bottle in my hand! It builds up and gets other instruments like keyboards going in the mix, with group vocals and a whole lotta fun! Once it’s done they hurtle into their energetic punk rock with lots of people on vocals and scattershot instrumentation. I know these guys are crazy enjoyable live, alas I have not experienced it myself. Seeing songs like this performed instead of from my speakers must enhance them even more. The punky stuff I guess is a bit like that full-band Atom and His Package material that was on a 7″ ages ago. Just really melodic and fun-loving, and you can’t argue with either of those two things.

Lots of people were involved in this record. It lists 11 different folks as the main band, and also credit Assfactor 4 (?!) as appearing on one song. The song starts off as a fast hardcore track, doesn’t sound vocally like A4 but hey! Then it goes a bit odd, going through sounding like something from a musical and finishing up as what they refer to as R&B and these days, ok! There’s also a song that sounds like Sean Na Na.

So there you have it, a good fun punk rock record to smile (or drink!) along to when you are in the mood. I like this band an awful lot, as much for their spirit and attitude as for their music. Smart!
