My cat Mog spazzed out and attacked my headphone cable whilst I listened to this 3 track demo by a band from London (I think). This is some pretty interesting stuff, totally messy and explosive chaotic hardcore. Track 2, “Screwtape”, is resplendent in it’s full on screamed vocals, distorted recording and flailing guitars. These kids must be all over the shop. I must say that it sounds pretty good for a demo, yet it is rough and uncultured enough to suit the style of music. This kind of chaos never sounds good when filtered through some other idiot’s idea of production. Here the band just spill their guts and blindly explode in a fit of utter emo violence. A blend of early Neil Perry and the latter day stuff when they added a little bit of singing to their sound is what springs to mind. Rip-roaring rhythms burst through the dischordant sound, so much energy eminates from this that I bet they play for about 15 minutes live then expire. The respites are brief although they indulge in a gorgeous emo break during “Friends Forever”, twinkling away to allow everyone to recover from dying in the trash compactor. It then builds up again in a spiralling emo shirt-grab / hair-tug-fest more reminiscent of the older bands than the Witching Hour type stuff that the rest of the demo is giving hints to. EMO AS FUCK!
Good effort! I’d never heard of these kids before but this demo is really interesting and shows a lot of promise.
