Inside Right - Superman Toolbelt - CD (2000)

Labels: Slender Means
Review by: Ian Cavell

Inside Right are a band that have really impressed me at the previous handful of all dayers I’ve been to (thankfully they always seem to be playing). But after hearing this CD my estimation of this band has rocketed somewhat. For what is basically energetic indie-rock (a genre I usually avoid big time) this is spectacular stuff. If more bands recorded songs like this… well, I’d be a happier man thats for sure. Style wise, comparisons can be made with bands such as Sunfactor and Grand Central I guess, but I think Inside Right have the edge on the lot of em.

‘Superman Toolbelt’ contains five songs (plus a rather useless instrumental) and there’s no way I’m gonna even try to pick a favourite. All five exhibit great songwriting and strong emotional vocals. However, I do find it hard to believe that someone can sing so passionately when a read of the lyrics reveals that most of them seem to be complete gibberish (anyone like to decode “mutli-facet Rubik’s grace, bitumas like felt blankets” for me?). But that is the only downer and believe me, the plus points far outweigh the negatives.

Lyrically a non-starter but musically this can’t be beaten. Inside Right. One of the better bands in the UK right now.
