Gameface - Always On - CD (2000)

Labels: Revelation
Review by: Ian Cavell

It seems like only yesterday I was humming along to the sweet melodies of ‘Every Last Time’, yet already Gameface have gone and spoilt us all rotten with a brand new LP. Ten more songs, and, well, its Gameface. Surely everyone knows just what this band are all about? If not, then try “melody drenched rock songs that make you grin like an idiot” and go and pick up a copy of this album.

Anyway, as I found with the last album, there is always a handful of songs that just envelop you instantly (but with the unfortunate side-effect of completely over shadowing the remaining tracks). This time around just check out the upbeat ‘Warmest Heart Attack’, the dynamic ‘New Landscaping’ and ‘Robots’ (sadly the “robots in disguise” lyric refers to a bunch of hardcore kids and not fictitious cartoon robots that had the ability to transform into cars and shit like that – boo!).

Ok, now comes the slightly negative aspect. ‘Always On’ is not quite as good as ‘Every Last Time’ and I think two or three of the songs are actually pretty weak by Gameface’s usual high standards. Also there is no ‘killer’ track (ie ‘Mercury Dimes’ from the past album, ‘How Far Is Goodbye?’ from the recent EP). But put those gripes to one side and you have a quality melodic-rock LP with some great songs. Its just not the full-on album of the year that some people might have been hoping for.
