American Heritage - We Will Pay You $125 To Observe You Deteriorate - CD (2000)

Labels: Class B
Review by: Luke Younger

This record brings me real joy. I went to see American Heritage play in London for the first time a while ago and I can’t really explain how excited I was (or how good it was either). I also cannot believe I forgot to include it in my top 5 gigs of the year, so if you read my peice, just mentally replace Hot Water Music with American Heritage upstairs at the garage. It was better.

Anyway I got to the show and I noticed they had a new record which I didn’t know was coming out. Yes! And it included some bonus material like covers of Born Against, Black Flag, Dead and Gone and Swiz 5.90 on it! Doublely yes! And here are some other good pointers about it. The music is their best yet (6 awesome songs, still hard, fast and complex), they have included song titles (great ones too), it has a rapper on one of the secret tracks (Brother El, the voice of the Chicago underground) and sleevenotes that are really funny.

I think this band would be more popular with hardcore kids if they had a guy screaming over the top about being true to ‘da crew’ or some other mindless garbage. But AH don’t, and lets be thankful for it.
