The Enablers - To Thine Own Ruin Be True - CD (2004)

Labels: Suburban Home
Review by: Damien Mills

After seeing this band play in some out of the way pub in Coventry and picking up their ep ‘Sweet Fuck All’ these guys became one of my favourite bands, sort of a Hot Water Music meets Bruce Springsteen thing going on (both of those artists I am a big fan of anyway), perfect heartbreak songs without ever being too precious or stupid, but yeah. When I saw on their site that after a very long wait they had a new album out I was very excited, however it seems I got my hopes up a bit too much and have ended up a little disappointed (story of my life….)

This cd is not new stuff, it’s basically everything they released previously (ep, and a split 7″) plus a couple of acoustic songs added on. The music is still amazing, but not new. I can only imagine it exists mainly for the u.s. kids, where maybe newest industry aren’t that well distributed? I can dig that though as it means you can get their stuff without investing in ‘that’ label….

But for real, if you dig grumbly voiced Gainesville style stuff and haven’t checked these guys out yet, then do it with this, now.
