Labels: ape must not kill ape
Review by: Andy Malcolm
I keep wanting to write this band as Alamathea for some reason. Although that name sounds a bit godmo. Anyways, on the C forum I accidentally coined a phrase “Pretty Average Euro Skramz!” or PAES! Now Amalthea are not PAES! because they are “Pretty Good Euro Skramz!”, this is due to the fact that they rather capably combine their outpourings of hefty squawking and spazzing with some excellent melody and sung parts, which means they bludgeon together the styles of Raein and Yaphet Kotto – and it works! The screamed vocals are very hoarse, but it succeeds for me because the music retains so much of the essential melody, and when in the first song it all drops out for some twinkling and singing it also sounds like Boilermaker. Only for about 10 seconds though. Sure, the parts with the harsher vocals are fairly generic, but its the fact that they work other elements into their songs so well that I find them to be enjoyable. I am particularly partial to the first song on the b-side where it starts off like Structures with one boy crying and one singing over mid-paced melodies before it ups the pace and spazzes off the turntable.
There are 4 songs on here, I like them all. Definitely more PGES! than PAES!
