Charlottefield - How Long Are You Staying? - CD (2005)

Labels: Jonson Family
Review by: Alex Deller

Here, in a shade under half an hour, Charlottefield construct some vast, gleaming post-rock structure that towers above much else around it, showing all those Jehu-jocking bores just how it should be done: mathematically precise, structurally sound, but all the while at the mercy of some lunatic whim that might just bring the whole bastard crashing down. Glasslike chord fragments are bound tight by muscular, lunging basslines and metronomic rhythms, with only the bawling megaphone-aided vocals wriggling free and left to their own evil devices, these squalled incoherencies contrasting effectively with the brisk, clean nature of the music and giving it the kind of vaguely dangerous edge that lifts how long are you staying? head and shoulders above the ranks of similar acts ruining their rock with too many fannying airs and graces.
