Vuur play at 45rpm, Grinding Halt 33. That should probably tell you something straight away. Vuur’s rocket-powered thrashy hardcore is fast, harsh and chaotic even for this day and age, so don’t let anyone tell you nothing good ever came out of Belgium. Grinding Halt are ex-Shikari, which is one hell of a legacy to live up to. More measured and varied, they combine fast and slow to addictive effect, with some excellent discordant riffs in there that remind me of a more hardcore Unpersons (which is an obscure reference, more’s the pity). The songs flow nicely between tempo changes, and make some surprising leaps that contrasts nicely with Vuur’s all-out raging attack. Simply put, this is a fine split.
