Potboiler - Izzy Alcantara - 7

Labels: salinas

This is a rather solid 7″ here from Potboiler. Except I remember feeling a bit disappointed by it initially, because it was a lot more generic sounding than I recalled the 7″ on Art of the Underground to be. Execpt I don’t have a copy of that 7″ now, so I can’t really compare them. Silly me. Anyway. This 7″ is named after a rather obscure baseball player who karate kicked a catcher in the mush in a AAA ball game. Way to go, washed up ex-major leaguer! I am in a baseball mood today as the Phillies knocked off the Brewers 3-1 in the first game of the NL playoffs. GO PHILS!

Less baseball, more melodic punk. Potboiler are pretty standard here, but it’s good. I generally enjoy this kind of melodic punk, with a good catchy tune and vocalists having a beer and falling over each other. Of course, if you own records by bands that span the level of heardofness from Husker Du to Jawbreaker to Radon to the Gibbons to Ash County Sluggers, then you will either have heard this kind of thing way too many times before, or be down for even more. Each of the 4 songs is finely crafted to be served up in the sweaty basement / bar / parking lot of where ever bands like this play their shows. It’s a perfect example of the style, I am left wondering if this band is now split up, and now doing Get Bent or something. Regardless, I can’t knock it – fine 7″, check it out if you still have space on your 7″ shelf for this kind of shit!
