Patterns ooze style. Their tunes are slick, they’re catchy, they’re technically brilliant, yet somehow manage to avoid being over the top. There’s something fresh about this 7″. I keep thinking to myself of other bands that I could maybe draw parallels to; it’s something I try to avoid and don’t like doing, yet in a lot of cases it’s far easier to lump records in with others of that ilk, no matter how hard you try not to. This doesn’t happen with Pattern’s “People I Adore” 7″; it’s fresh and it’s straight to the point. There’s no waffle, no bullshit, no wasting time – nor sitting around waiting for others to make punk music that makes you wanna move. Don’t for one second think that these guys lack depth, far from it, in fact. Patterns manage to flitter between erratic and off beat technical finger picking and complete lush jazz rhythms that bridges the gap between emo vocals (hey, they all sing and shout; sometimes at once, at other times not, I like it, it’s really fucking good), punk roots and disco beats. Don’t think they sound exclusively like each of these genres, don’t be so naive! These guys just know how to make technically brilliant angular tunes while leaving the bullshit indoors; they know how to have fun and they know how to rock.
I’m looking forward to see where these guys will go from this 7″. I know they’ve a few splits planned and it’ll be interesting to see how they progress musically on an LP and beyond. For those who may have been wondering, this band sound nothing like their predecessors, including notable screamo bands from the German diy scene. The final track “Definitions” really sticks out for me. It draws the 7″ to a close perfectly and pretty much defines the band. Both vocally and musically brilliant, Patterns have pulled off their own sound, they’ve dropped anchor through this solid 7″, without letting anyone getting in their way.
