Get past the ridiculously terrible artwork (scantily clad cyberpunk fetish girl on a 70s Dr Who budget with unwise font choices) and you’ve got Soilent Green back on tip-top form following the not-bad ‘Confrontation’ album and some sort of voodoo curse that led to a series of personal mishaps (drugs, not one but two motor vehicle crashes, former members getting killed in bizarre mutual shootings, more drugs, Hurricane fucking Katrina) that would have spelt disaster for most bands. With Eyehategod’s Brian Patton in the ranks, you’re never far away from riffs that are forever steeped in the blues, and it’s a thing of joy to hear hundreds of sweet riffs literally chucked out at you with wanton abandon. What SG do differently to EHG is that they’re much more manic, with a bunch of brutal blasting grind in the mix, but at the end of the day those riffs remain bluesy, just played dead fast and heavy. They keep shifting song structures and timings all over the bloody place, but they don’t do it for the sake of it, flow being the all-important element.
