Malevolentia - Demo - Tape (2007)

Labels: Cinza Discos
Review by: Oli Saunders

There is some good screamo coming out of Chile and this is one example. This demo by Malevolentia came out about a year ago, but I figure pretty much no one on CZ will have heard of them, hence the review. You know the drill, if you like evolved forms of Witching Hour screamo that whilst not generally being on par with the original sound, still show plenty of passion and some originality, then there’s a good chance you’ll like this. My sister doesn’t and gave me a strange look and some criticism when she heard me playing it, but no music is for everyone.

All four tracks on here make me happy. The screamed vocals are really good, and the guitars jangle well around them. For the most part it’s fairly fast and chaotic, slowing down in a few places where spoken vocals take their place. Track three, entitled ‘Brandy Gun Control Hill’ is the standout for me, raging away at the start. The vocals are awesome here I think – really heart wrenching stuff.

The demo also exists on CDR (released by Estructuras Muertas), but I think that version may be out of print now. Other Chilean screamo bands to check out include Vlado Petrik, Anais, Mal De Mer and Merhan Karimi. They seem to have a pretty cool community set up and I wish I could go to Chile to see them all play!
