The Color Wheels - s/t - CD (2008)

Labels: Viper Bite
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Not so long ago there was a review of a band called Paper the Operator on here, and I quite liked them. Turns out that their singer has a side project, and they are pretty decent too. The Color Wheels is super sweet indie pop, with 11 songs in 25 minutes. Now that’s my kind of attention span! The songs pitch between slacker and energetic, with plenty of guitar jangles and good tunes. It’s lodged somewhere between Very Emergency era Promise Ring, and the Fountains of Wayne. “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin'” reminds me of the Jejune stuff where they ditched the big swirly guitars and wrote some straight up pop songs. You also get the odd keyboard part here and there. I am generally not the world’s biggest fan of keyboards, but they aren’t intrusive and add some flavour to the songs. The band happens to be a husband and wife team, which is as sweet as the music is. Yes, this is nice stuff, I am not about to write an excessively long eulogy as to it’s awesomeness, as in the end it is fairly disposable given it’s simplicity and nature. However, whilst it’s spinning, it is eminently listenable.
