Witches - s/t - 7

Labels: Mandible – salinas

For a moment I thought Witches with Dicks had finally figured out they should change their name. Then I started the record, and I realised I was a bit wrong. This kicks in with moody guitars ringing out, and then female vocals and I know this is the kind of indie rock that I am going to be very keen on. “Big Rivers” rumbles and forges on, like a mix of Sunny Day Real Estate and something more pondering from the mid 90s indie canon. I am having a hard time describing this, possibly as I am still recovering from an intense 2 hour session of Left 4 Dead, or possibly as I have lost my ability to review since I had a haircut. Basically, Witches rely on an astute use of repetitious guitars, subtle yet enticing basslines and a well judged sense of rhythm. The 7″ doesn’t really have a song that stands out, but I definitely enjoyed listening and am left waiting for more, which makes me think this band is best suited to the full length format, and that they will drop a fine LP at some point in the not so distant future. In the meantime, if you have a penchant for rolling indie rock of a downbeat nature, you’d do well to check this rather good single out. Now get to work on that LP, Witches.
