This is some endearing music on a single. I must admit that I am a grumpy old fuckwit who grumbles about bands playing good music, but Monument really win me over. This is three songs of delightfully swaying midwestmo, ripped directly from the song books of Cap’n Jazz and such like. Think guys rocking back and forth on their heels whilst playing some guitar, then letting loose with shouty singing. Boys squeaking “Yeah!” and all that. This is massively under-produced, and delightfully raw. That aspect of it brings to mind that wonderful Kossabone Red LP from a few years ago. If you like that, you’ll be more than happy with Monument. Each song is brimming with energy and enthusiasm, and they score highly when they drop the pace down on “Memory and Location” also. Right good. “It’s Clear” fills an entire side of vinyl, and well, if this one doesn’t hit in the right place then I will be very disappointed. It’s got it all, well, it’s got the fast bits and the slow twinkly bits. So good. So good.
Definitely the best midwestmo revivalist, Cap’n Jazz worshipping band from the past several years. I can not wait for them to drop an LP. It even comes with handwritten lyrics in an envelope. Ah, sweet, sweet emo.
