There is a mind boggling amount of indie / emo bands around right now. For the first time in a decade, it is actually ok to be playing this stuff again. Everyone Everywhere is leading the charge of poppier bands, doing a Promise Ring type thing but with a tiny bit of twiddliness that is more common amongst their peers. The opening track “Everyone Everywhere” is a bit of a mish mash, it has a really nice, rolling and repeating guitar part, but is broken up by some messy samples and some out of place crunchiness. “Thermal Dynamics” though picks things up mightily, with a stunning fuzzy guitar sound that is straight outta Evergreen. This is my favourite song on here. The vocals are off-key and ever so slightly von Bohlen-esque, but that main guitar sound makes me grin like a prize idiot. There’s plenty of cute guitar jangling here too, and as the song ranges off to a climax, it somehow perfectly evokes the old midwestmo flavour – the open fields, the sun beating down, the telegraph pole… Love it.
Two more songs on the b-side, “Cool Pool Keg Toss Peter” is a fine poppy effort, bouncing around like a stupid puppy that hasn’t yet figured out that one day it’s going to be a lazy dog. Good ‘un! “We’re Going Home” fuzzes up again, but is probably the weakest song on here, it’s got some nice energertic moments but gang vocals are only to be committed in straight edge to be honest.
One awesome song here and a couple of enjoyable others that are almost there. I think these guys are pretty close to nailing something super, and I look forward to hearing that.
