Lion of the North - the Compass Calls - CD (2007)

Labels: self released
Review by: Danny Parsons

I received this little curiosity as a “˜bonus’ after I bought a bunch of stuff from this guy on Ebay. Anyway, turns out, it’s pretty damn good. Four songs in total and the first kicks off all ambient-like, crazy sounds and some mental chap talking over the top about being “œthe lion”. I assume it’s a quote from a film or something; fine with me. Anyway, it all kicks in after that, snazzy guitars, pounding drums and at about 50 seconds in the singer shouts “œhoi!”; pretty much cinched it for me to be honest. All fast changes and that and the songs are over pretty quick at around two minutes each, the notable exception being the second song entitled Point Me to Providence in which there’s a pretty hefty build-up in the middle section. All leads to chaos again though, with a gap in which everyone has a shout about something or other. Similarly there’s a bit of group vocals on the last song There’s Always Next Year. It starts of all acoustically and then everyone has a bash at vocals, chanting “œWasting our days, digging our graves” “” a real stand-out section for me. It all goes ballistic about half-way through and the end sees everyone come together again, no instruments, just shouting, screaming, singing. Brilliant. I thought the packaging was pretty cool for a couple of months until my mate pointed out that the figure on the front was a chap playing guitar, then I thought it was a bit naff. Inside’s good though, spray-painted cd, hand-stamped arty bits and it’s hand-numbered with silver pen too! Good effort guys. Gotta remember that there’s five of these kids so there’s an awful lot going on; the songs are pretty layered. Think Daniel Striped Tiger crossed with Hot Cross maybe? Either way, it’s fairly good for a young bunch.
