Real Estate - Fake Blues - 7

Labels: Half Machine
Review by: Andy Malcolm

There seems to be a lot of bands around lately doing a sort of surfy, west coast (USA) kind of thing. Real Estate aren’t even from the west coast as far as I can tell, but this is one of the more enjoyable takes on the sound. Rather than going down the route of many of their peers and blowing things out of the water in a muddle of blown out speakers and poor recordings, Real Estate give it a mediocre recording and a hungover wall of melancholy haze on these two tracks. “Fake Blues” revolves around repetitious drumming and a melody that barely changes all song. The vocals glide through, hardly troubling things but you do register their presence. On the flip we get “Green River”, which has a similar template, except it seems really short and I never quite get a handle on it. If you a down with Ganglians “Monster Head Room” LP, or Nodzzz, or other bands that know how to craft a tune, then this seven inch will please you. Basically I like this a lot and I am very much looking forward to hearing a full length from these guys, as seven inches are merely a tease.
