Okay, didn’t really have high hopes for this one. Never heard of any of these bands before; here goes though”¦
Easy Hips are from Brighton and have two songs on this release “” the first of which is called “White Ace’. Presumably it’s named after that chemically cider that poor uni kids / scally kids from my way seem to like. Way to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, guys. I bet they think it’s either ‘outre’ or funny. Or worse. BOTH. The second song has a long name that is probably funny to somebody. Not me though. They’re apparently inspired by Blood Brothers which I can’t see really and even if I could, I’ve never liked Blood Brothers.
Run, Walk! Are up next and might be the worst band to have an exclamation mark in their name since Los Campesinos(!). Their song doesn’t really go anywhere and has a kinda faux-Fugazi feel to it. Not very good. Definitely the best out of this lot though.
Dreamboats have a song called “Fallen Rose(s)’ and according to the press release, sound like early Every Time I Die. Near the middle of the song it goes into this drony bit which sounds a bit like Young Widows (weird effects on the vox etc).
Le Swing start off (on both songs) doing this BSM/Meet Me In St. Louis-sounding thing but with harsher vocals. It says on the press release that they do a Bucket Full of Teeth sort of thing but I don’t really see it at all. I doubt that Will Killingsworth & co. would be happy that this is the sort of balls they’ve inspired.
Overall, completely what I was expecting. Tediously linear song writing that obviously has delusions of something. What that something is, I can never be sure. Good news is kids, this is the new wave of screamo (or so it claims)! Boo. Hiss.
