I think this is as run of the mill as it gets. It judders out of the gate sounding something like the Strokes, and gently slips into 2005/6/7/8/9 “indie” with high pitched vocals that really remind me of some other band that was on the radio a while back. The press sheet though is fascinating. 15 years ago when the guys here were 10, they were in a band that played an Archers of Loaf cover. WHAT THE FUCK?? That is insane! One of the other notes says they are a bit like Pinback. Not on this song. They played with Superchunk a few times. J Robbins produced this. One quote says “The boys have resurrected the gritty college-rock of iconic ’90s Chapel Hill acts such as Archers of Loaf and Polvo”. I should be loving this shit – these are all the right words! At one point I was doubting that this was even the right band, maybe some other band had slipped into the package but listening again – the production is so clearly touched by the hand of J Robbins that I had to rule that one out. So why is this missing so much? To me this is utterly straight forward indie, and could have been perpetuated by any one of a generic crew of NME lauded mainstream indie bands from the past 6 or 7 years. One possibility is that they picked the most boring song on the album to release as a single and the rest is much better. Fingers crossed. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if we get sent it.
