Captured Tracks appeared to go on a bit of UK binge not so long ago, and I think that Veronica Falls may be my favourite of that batch. This band has wilfully gothy aesthetics, with two boys and two girls sporting dubious haircuts and bunches of flowers on the back of their record, and singing lyrics like “falling for a ghost like you” on ‘Found Love in a Grave Yard’. Whilst we’re surely not supposed to take this kind of goofy nonsense seriously, this is still some ruddy marvellous indie popping of the kind that gets me a bit hot under the collar. The song veers from 60s jangle and ominous gothy boy backing vocals to lovely little harmonies and a catchy chorus. It’s a fine blend. Over on t’ flip we have “Starry Eyes”, which is pretty much a straight up poppy effort and very nice with it. More of those harmonies, some woo-oos and more pleasantness, not a million miles from the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but a little less polished. Overall this is a really nice seven, perhaps nothing outstanding but certainly the kind of thing I am more than happy to be listening to.
