Jakuzi's Attempt - III - CDR (2010)

Labels: Wire Globe
Review by: Oli Saunders

Jakuzi’s Attempt are from Austria, though that took a bit of work to find out, and play a sort of hardcore but with many other influences attached. The first riffs of ‘Whisper’ are not too unlike Botch, which is a good start, with shouted vocals over the top. Two minutes in the song changes to becoming far more melodic, and there are lots of whispered vocals along with some high pitched singing. Finally, the intensity as upped again as the finale kicks in.

There are three other songs on the EP and they continue with a similar sort of fuzzy disjointedness, in addition there are some noise like elements on the final two tracks. I find that it doesn’t quite work though – disjointedness still needs the songs to flow and these just don’t. It seems to be that they are trying to fit in different influences but not quite succeeding. I am not a fan of the vocals in general either, particularly the sung parts which are quite often repeated. It comes across as trying to be a bit too arty.

Overall, I like that the band have experimented with lots of sounds and have come up with something a bit different. I like various parts of the instrumentation, and I think some people will be into it. But I think the band need to improve the structure of their songs and nail a particular sound in an individual song, even if their sound remains somewhat diverse over the course of a few songs.
