Staraya Derevnya - From Inside the Log - CD (2010)

Labels: self released
Review by: David Giles

Honestly, I’m not sure what to make of this. On the one hand I feel myself starting to think along the “˜sounds like the artist doesn’t give enough of a shit’ lines I often find myself resorting to when it comes to experimental or left field (or whatever the squares call it these days) music. I can picture a tonne of Yussuf Jerusalem/hipster drone fans being all over this. At the same time though, sometimes it sounds like there might be something here. Just, I’m afraid, not enough for me. For every minute of “˜maybe this is alright’, there’s a good few minutes of feeling lost/bored. Not for me, but if you have a more sophisticated palate than I do (and lets be honest, all I wanna do is mosh and talk about how fucking sick ILLMATIC is), maybe this’ll do something for you.

Of course, moshing is awesome and Illmatic is the most fucking savage record ever recorded and when I wrote “˜more sophisticated palate’ I was thinking “˜boring fucking trend hopper'”¦ or maybe there really are people who genuinely enjoy this kind of thing.
