I will generally almost always write off punx playing country or acoustic solo stuff. If i wanted that nonsense i would move to Gainesville, and bed down in the No Idea office. As far as I’m concerned the best country record by a punk (sort of punk) is Country Mikes Greatest Hits by Mike D of the Beastie Boys.
Turns out this isn’t very country or acoustic, the first song is though (I mean it’s even got a fucking train sound on it) and it threw me, I’m glad I didn’t just frisbee it into the bin though, because by track two its almost shoe gazer, and then it just goes on in a kind of shoe gazer / indie way for the rest of it, yeah there’s a sprinkle of country, but its more Tom Waits than country and that’s fine. It reminds me of something that I can’t quite remember. Lets say if Tom Waits joined Slowdive, and then they wrote a record that was a mix of that plus a sprinkle of that band Hater (I once had a taped copy of their record and i think it was ok, but i just looked them up and it turns out there was someone out of Soundgarden in them, so I cant believe it could be good, but maybe just Chris Cornell was the weak link there?) and some nice swirly organ.
Apparently the main guy is from a band called Meth and Goats, they may be great, I’m not sure, I just tried to have a listen on their Myspace, and something annoying was playing the whole fucking time so I couldn’t hear their songs properly.
The record is a bit long for me though, I drifted off halfway or so, and restarted Bioshock, what a cracker eh?
Anyway it’s good stuff, worth a crack I reckon.
nb: I also drifted off of Bioshock about 3/4s of the way through. Happens everytime.
