What the, a garage 7″ that plays at 33rpm? It even has 45rpm written on it. Anyways. I reviewed a 7″ by these chaps on Trouble in Mind rather positively and I guess that’s why on earth this got sent to us. Actually, cherry bomb’s remind me of Paperboy.
First up we get “Black Wave”, which maintains the line I got from their previous record – a mix of Reigning Sound with sort of Ramones-ey vocals. It’s simple but effective, some enjoyable rockage that works for me. A few “woo-oohs” and a little organ (oo-er) hidden in the background too. It’s not quite enough of a rager to stand out in an extraordinarily crowded field, but there’s enough going on to make it worth giving multiple spins. “Broken Up” follows up in a similar vein. Flip over and you have “Cherry Bomb” which is kind of slow and really reminding me of something quite popular once upon a time that I can’t put my finger on. Definite 60s garage homage, but without a huge hook to suck me in. “Love Away” finishes us up with a simple, disposable strummer that didn’t catch my attention.
This didn’t make as much of an impact as their previous single for me, but maybe I’ve just heard too much other stuff like this since then. It doesn’t shine quite enough to recommend it whole heartedly, but it’s pleasing enough.
