I Saved Latin - The Ballroom - CD (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: james pacanowski

First off, two songs for one CD seems like an awful waste of plastic. I don’t know whether this was intended to be a 7″ release or what, frankly I am left scratching my head. It is all well and good going straight into recording if you’ve got some material, goodness knows the shelf-life on most bands these days is so short that haste is often necessary. But a two-song CD? It seems a bit peculiar. Makes my job a little easier at least.

Anyway, I Saved Latin are a math-rock band from London featuring a member of fellow UK math-rockers Action And Action. While obvious comparions could be made to that band, ISL don’t tend towards the chaotic, jarring math that AAA do, instead opting for more gently rocking ground. The jazzy guitar lines and honeyed vocals often recall Karate, or perhaps late-’90s to early-’00s Deep Elm stuff like Camber or Lewis. Sometimes they bust out some Appleseed Cast-esque delay and get a bit post-rock, but it doesn’t really get too self-indulgent. As far as softmo like this goes, it is pretty decent, though I feel like this sort of music lends itself better if they were to slow down a bit.

As disappointing as the fact that this is only two songs long is, perhaps the most disappointing part is that the last 20 seconds or so of second track “œIt’s Over” sound like the beginnings of a good song. Then it cuts out and – forgive the pun as it is unintentional “” it’s over. With luck, next time out they will pick up where they left off.
