Kytes - Ursa Major - CD (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: Jacob KiTR

I listened to this about two weeks ago and just now listened to it
again to write this review. Nothing about it sticks with me and
nothing about it makes me want to listen to it again. I originally
thought that maybe it just rubbed me the wrong way, or I was in a bad
mood, but a second listen confirms that it just really does nothing
for me.

The album is comprised of four songs that all sound very similar. All
of the songs are about five minutes, and each of them follow a similar
structure of twiddles, back and forth riffs, and a guy doing his best
Algernon-esque man-wail. The songs seem to go on for way too long and
get rather dull after a while, which is probably why other bands
playing similar music generally do not have five minute songs.

No song sticks out in particular as the best or the worst, as they
could pretty much all be the same song, but it doesn’t really matter.
This isn’t the worst album I’ve never heard, but I wouldn’t recommend
it to anyone. Musically they seem talented enough, and the recording
is alright, but that unfortunately that does not make the music less
boring.
