Pocket Genius - Nordic - CD (2011)

Labels: Boss Tuneage
Review by: Samuel Fowler

Boss Tuneage need to be commended on their relentless quest to ensure
that bands from ages and aaaages ago have a friendly platform waiting
for them should they decide the time is ripe to unleash some new
goodness. Pocket Genius fit this mould, seeing as their last offering
was over a decade ago. Having given a quick listen to a blog link I
found with the last record on it (let it never be said cz reviewers
don’t do their research!) it duly transpires that:

a) They eschew change

b) This is a good thing in their case

What we have here, yeah, is super! They pitch up camp somewhere around
Soar era Samiam. They’ve got the slurred indie rock cast of that band,
mixed in with what in places is an almost countryish keen. Fairly
often they touch on the emo bluster of something reminiscent the early
crackle bands, the guitar work especially is bob on. Check out either
“Everyone can’t be your friend” on “side b” of the cd for example. CD
side b? does this mean if I put it upside down in the CD tray I’ll be
treated to a whole new experience?

hrmm…

Despite most of this album looking north of the three minute mark, it
was over pretty sharpish, & there is definitely more than enough here
to make a varied and enjoyable listen. If I had to suggest a band
mining these seams, Pocket Genius have to be one of the best I have
heard in some time!

Gold star of “actually-being-both-original-and-pretty-great” duly awarded.
